NE-02: The Golden Opportunity

February 16, 2008

Crossposted at RichardCarter2008.com and various other blogs:

For nearly ten long years the people of my Congressional district, Nebraska’s “Fighting” Second, have been represented by the boy Congressman, Republican Lee Terry. Despite being a fairly progressive area, the district has not had a Democrat represent it since 1995. Once described by Stephen Colbert as the “part of Nebraska with people,” the Second District is very much in play. I dare say it may be the Golden Opportunity of the 2008 election.

My fellow progressives, this is a chance to revive the Democratic Party in Nebraska — this is a chance to add another young, fresh face to the House of Representatives. My friends, this is a chance to boot a rubber stamp Bush-Dog Republican out of Congress and replace him with a much better Democrat! (You know, that whole more and better Democrats idea!)

In 2006 I stood on the sidelines as Jim Esch and a merry band of Young Democrats crashed the gate in Nebraska and nearly won. I have always, and perhaps will always, regret not getting involved with that campaign. Well in 2008 I am making my stand! Lee Terry does not deserve, and has not earned, another term in the United States Congress.

For years I have suggested that Terry’s success is based on a deceptive media campaign that fails to inform the voters of Congressman Terry’s real record. But as time has progressed, the people of the second district have become fed up with Lee Terry and the Republican Party. What’s even more interesting is that the media seems fed up as well.

Terry has been a vocal opponent of the SCHIP expansion that the Democratic Congress has been trying to pass. Terry sent out campaign mailers (prepared by taxpayer’s expense no less), wrote editorials, hosted town hall forums, and even spent money on a radio ad trying to explain his opposition to the program. Time after time, Congressman Terry flat out lied about the program - and time after time, local media called him on it by providing frequent fact checks and allowing SCHIP supporters to slam Terry in a editorial format. This is only one example of what I see as a media revolt.

Now is our time, this is our chance.

I am working for former Air Force Captain Richard Carter. A smart, articulate Democrat who, when I first met him, told me he wanted to continue his service to his country by running for the United States Congress. He talked to me about this combat experience in Iraq and Afghanistan, his work as an Economics professor at a local college, and told me how he thought America could do so much better.

Before I ever heard any of his positions, I signed up. I knew he had a good chance to win, and I knew I wanted to be involved with this campaign. Turns out, he is fairly progressive — so I picked a winner.

Here is Richard’s platform:

  • Bring our brave men and women home from Iraq.
  • Treat our veterans with the respect they deserve, and provide the assistance with healthcare and education that we promised.
  • Strengthen our military so that we can defend our country and deal effectively with the threats of the 21st century.
  • Restore fiscal responsibility and cut wasteful spending.
  • Invest in industry and infrastructure, and promote innovation to create high-paying jobs here—where they belong.
  • Invest in the American people and our future. Make sure parents are able to provide affordable healthcare and a quality education for themselves and their children.

Yesterday, I was inspired by a young Kossack with the username oaksmarts when he wrote a diary passionately urging the netroots to get involved in the campaign of Victoria Wulsin. I watched throughout the day, I even donated myself, as people from around the country got involved by donating. $250-$500-$1500-$2000 and beyond - it was inspiring!

For that very same reason I ask the netroots to help give this campaign a shot in the arm. Richard is a great candidate with a real chance to win. The challenges we face are far too great to send the same Washington chess pieces back to Congress. We must strive to do better. Richard is better.

Every dollar counts. Thank you for your support.
