Carter comments on rising cost of air defense

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Second District Congressional candidate Richard Carter commented today on the rising cost of air defense, and stated his support for increased funding to replace the Air Force’s aging fighter jets:
“The operations in Iraq and Afghanistan have placed a tremendous strain on our forces. It is more important than ever before that our Air Force has the equipment it needs to defend the United States and to ensure air supremacy in any theatre or contingency. Moreover, with a resurgent Russia and an increasingly well-armed China, it is vital that we get the next generation of fighters in service as quickly as possible.”
Carter also questioned the lack of funding for new fighters in the Bush Administration’s proposed budget, released last week:
“The Bush administration didn’t include the Air Force’s requests in its budget proposal. We’ve seen this same pattern in regards to funding for the department of Veteran’s Affairs – the administration has under-budgeted the real costs, and then left it to Congress to make up the difference. We should not be playing politics with our national defense.”
Carter is a Captain in the Air Force Reserve and a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan.

NE-02: The Golden Opportunity

Crossposted at RichardCarter2008.com and various other blogs:
For nearly ten long years the people of my Congressional district, Nebraska’s “Fighting” Second, have been represented by the boy Congressman, Republican Lee Terry. Despite being a fairly progressive area, the district has not had a Democrat represent it since 1995. Once described by Stephen Colbert as the “part of Nebraska with people,” the Second District is very much in play. I dare say it may be the Golden Opportunity of the 2008 election.
My fellow progressives, this is a chance to revive the Democratic Party in Nebraska — this is a chance to add another young, fresh face to the House of Representatives. My friends, this is a chance to boot a rubber stamp Bush-Dog Republican out of Congress and replace him with a much better Democrat! (You know, that whole more and better Democrats idea!)

Jobs and the Economy
February 15, 2008
I believe that the free enterprise system is the engine of everything America does, and everything that we want this country to be. However, under the guise of free-market ideology, the Bush administration and the Republican establishment have pushed irresponsible tax cuts, cronyism, obscenely wasteful pork programs, and unnecessarily burdensome regulations. The short-sighted, disastrously irresponsible economic policies of the last eight years have left the majority of Nebraskans – and all Americans – behind. American workers are the most productive in the world, yet as productivity has soared, wages have stagnated. We’re faced with a unique set of economic challenges, but also enormous opportunities. I believe we need a new vision for the American economy; an economic agenda for the 21st century.
Carter: Bush’s budget “a disservice to our veterans.”
February 15, 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Richard Carter, Congressional candidate for Nebraska’s Second District, sharply criticized the Bush administration’s proposed budget. The budget proposal, made public Monday, would severely cut per-veteran funding for the Veterans Administration. It would more than double the co-payment charges to veterans for prescription drugs and would require some to pay a yearly $250 fee for the ability to access care. Carter has made veterans’ issues a centerpiece in this campaign.
“Our brave men and women are returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan with serious injuries, some of which require extensive medical care. It is the duty of the United States government to live up to the promises it has made. Our veterans have served this country proudly and deserve our complete support. Bush’s proposed budget is completely out of touch with the needs of our veterans. For George Bush and his allies in Congress to make it more difficult for veterans to receive care after they have sacrificed so much is a disgrace.”
